How Is Your Car Shipping Price Calculated?
Transport Distance
The total mileage between your pickup and drop-off locations is the biggest factor affecting your shipping cost.
Seasonal Fluctuations
Carrier availability and pricing shift throughout the year. Busy months — especially summer and holiday periods — may lead to higher rates and limited space.
Vehicle Type
Your vehicle's size, weight, and ground clearance influence the price, since larger vehicles take up more carrier space.
Pickup and Delivery Locations
The accessibility of your chosen pickup and delivery areas affects scheduling and available truck space.
Shipment Date
Flexible dates often secure better pricing. Selecting a specific day or a high-demand timeframe can impact the final cost.
Trailer Type (Open or Enclosed)
Open carriers are the most common and affordable option. Enclosed trailers provide added protection, ideal for luxury, classic, or specialty vehicles — and come at a higher rate.

Smart Tips to Lower Your Auto Transport Costs
- Book Early. Reserve your spot 2–4 weeks in advance for better pricing and more flexible scheduling.
- Use Seasonal Price Drops. Winter and early spring often offer lower rates. Try to avoid holiday and summer rush periods.
- Choose Midweek Pickup. Tuesday–Thursday pickups usually come with better availability and lower carrier rates.
- Compare Several Quotes. Check prices from multiple carriers. Tiger Auto Transport offers a price-match guarantee on valid competitor quotes.
- Choose Open Transport. Open carriers provide the most budget-friendly option and work well for standard vehicles in good condition.
Receiving Your Vehicle in Sioux Falls, South Dakota
- Inspect the Vehicle Carefully. Check all panels, glass, and wheels in good lighting. Take photos and note any damage on the Bill of Lading.
- Check Interior Items. Remove personal items or loose accessories to avoid unexpected issues or extra charges.
- Review All Documents. Carefully read the inspection report and shipping documents. Confirm all existing or new damage is documented.
- Test Basic Functions. Ensure the car starts and drives, and that all lights, windows, and wipers function properly.
- Communicate Clearly. If something looks wrong, discuss it calmly, document it with photos, and follow up in writing.
The Cheapest Way To Transport Your Car – 15 Tips
- Choose a Reliable Carrier. Select a licensed, insured auto transporter. Avoid brokers that prioritize the lowest price over dependable service.
- Ask for Discounts. Military, students, and returning customers may qualify for special pricing. Asking never hurts — and often helps you save.
- Select Open Transport. Open carriers are the most budget-friendly option and work perfectly for standard vehicles in good condition.
- Plan Ahead. Booking your shipment 1–2 weeks in advance improves pricing and scheduling availability. Enclosed transport may require even more notice.
- Flexible Pickup & Drop-Off. Choosing a nearby public location instead of strict door-to-door service can help reduce overall shipping costs.
- Ship During Off-Peak Seasons. Late winter and early spring typically offer the lowest rates. Avoid peak demand periods like summer and major holidays.
- Watch Fuel Prices. Fuel prices influence transport rates. When fuel drops, carriers often offer more competitive pricing.
- Size and Weight Matter. Larger or heavier vehicles cost more to ship due to increased trailer space and handling requirements.
- Make Sure Your Car Runs. Running vehicles are always cheaper to transport. Non-running cars require additional equipment and labor.
- Consider Terminal-to-Terminal Delivery. Dropping off and picking up your vehicle at designated terminals can be more affordable than full door-to-door service.
- Request Multiple Quotes. Comparing estimates from several reputable companies helps you find the best rate. Share personal details only when you're ready to book.
- Stay Flexible With Timing. Flexible pickup and delivery windows improve your chances of securing the best price.
- Ship More Than One Vehicle. Transporting multiple cars — either yours or shared with family or friends — may qualify you for a multi-vehicle discount.
- Be Time Flexible. Flexible pickup and delivery dates make scheduling easier for carriers and often result in better pricing.
- Avoid Peak Holidays. Peak holiday periods often come with delays and premium pricing. Shipping before or after these dates is usually more cost-effective.
- Work With Local Experts. Companies familiar with local routes, weather patterns, and traffic conditions can offer more reliable scheduling and pricing.
Seasonal Tips for Shipping Your Car in Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Understanding Sioux Falls, South Dakota's climate and seasonal patterns helps you plan vehicle transport more effectively and avoid potential delays.
Winter Shipping (November–March)
- Heavy snow on I-90, I-94, and I-80 can delay northern tier routes by 1–3 days during major storms — do not commit to a hard delivery deadline without a weather buffer.
- Ensure your vehicle has at least a quarter tank of fuel before pickup — carriers in cold climates occasionally need to warm engines during multi-day cross-country hauls.
- Salt spray from winter roads will appear on your vehicle during open carrier transport — expect a thorough wash to be needed on arrival, and document your paint condition before shipping.
Extreme Cold Precautions
- Check your battery before shipping — vehicles sitting on a carrier in sub-zero temperatures for 2–3 days can struggle to start on delivery if the battery is marginal.
- Remove any water from windshield washer reservoirs if shipping a non-running vehicle in freezing conditions — expansion damage is possible.
- Diesel vehicles may require fuel treatment (anti-gel additive) for extended winter transit through the upper Midwest and Northern Plains.
Snowbird Season (October–January)
- Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Illinois generate some of the highest snowbird vehicle shipment volumes in the country — southbound demand to Florida and Arizona spikes sharply in October.
- Book at least 3 weeks ahead for October–January southbound shipments from the upper Midwest; carrier availability tightens significantly during this window.
- If you're shipping south for winter and returning in spring, book your spring return at the same time as your fall departure — it simplifies coordination and locks in pricing.
Spring & Summer Advantages
- Late spring and summer (May–August) are the most favorable windows for Midwest auto transport — roads are clear, carrier availability is good, and rates are typically at their most competitive.
- University move-out in May and move-in in late August creates localized demand spikes near Ann Arbor, Madison, Iowa City, Minneapolis, and Lincoln.
- Summer is the ideal time to ship collector and classic vehicles in the upper Midwest — no salt, no ice, no freeze risk for open carrier runs.

Receiving Your Vehicle in Sioux Falls, South Dakota
The delivery stage is the final — and one of the most important — parts of the car shipping process. To make sure everything goes smoothly when your vehicle arrives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, follow these simple expert-recommended steps:
-
Inspect the Vehicle Carefully
Take a moment to examine your vehicle in good lighting. Walk around it and check all panels, windows, mirrors, and tires for any signs of transport-related damage. If anything looks off, take clear photos and note the issue on the inspection report before signing.
-
Check the Inside of the Vehicle
Before completing delivery, make sure all interior items, accessories, or listed belongings are still present and undamaged. Compare the interior to your pre-shipping inventory.
-
Review Delivery Paperwork
Go through the Bill of Lading and final inspection documents. Confirm that any pre-existing or new marks are recorded correctly. Keep a signed copy for your personal records.
-
Test Key Functions
Start the car and ensure headlights, turn signals, wipers, windows, and locks are working properly. Checking immediately helps you catch small problems early.
-
Communicate Clearly
If you notice anything unusual or have concerns, speak with the driver calmly and document everything with photos and written notes — especially if you plan to file a claim.
